Hadi Matar, 24, was detained on Friday after allegedly slashing Salman Rushdie minutes before he was about to appear at a literary event in New York.
According to Rushdie’s spokesman, the author was stabbed in the arm and liver during the attack, would likely lose an eye, and was unable to talk since he was put on a ventilator.
Regarding a facial injury sustained by a man who was on stage with Rushdie at the time of the attack, Matar is also charged with assault.
Matar was allegedly wearing an all-black outfit and a mask during the presentation at the nonprofit education and retreat center Chautauqua Institution, according to a number of audience members.

Hadi Matar Enters A Not Guilty Plea In A Murder Attempt
Hadi Matar, the man accused of assaulting and attempting to kill Salman Rushdie at a gathering, entered a not-guilty plea in a New York court.
During his hearing, Hadi, 24, was accused of a “preplanned” offense; as a result, the prosecution entered a not-guilty plea on his behalf.
On Saturday, he showed up in court sporting a white face mask and a black and white jumpsuit. He had his hands held back in front of him.
During the introduction of Salman Rushdie during a Friday speech at the Chautauqua Institute in New York, he allegedly assaulted the author.
After discovering from the district attorney that Hadi Matar had taken actions to put himself in a position to kill Salman Rushdie, the judge made the decision to place him in jail without the option of posting bail.

In a hospital in the US, he is presently battling for his life. Rushdie reportedly has a severely damaged liver and could lose an eye.
The bad news was delivered to him through email from his agent Andrew Wylie. Salman had a burst liver, a possible eye loss, and nerve damage to one of his arms.
According to law enforcement sources, the author was stabbed “at least once in the neck and at least once in the belly.”
