The FBI’s Newark field office found Alkattoul on Thursday of last week, a day after putting out an unusual notice about a real threat to synagogues in and around New Jersey. Alkattoul permitted agents to listen in on his phone and conduct an interview.

Alkattoul apparently told the agents that carrying out an attack was “possible” during the interviews, but he also said that he was only acting and “did not actually wish to launch an assault as soon as possible.”

Alkattoul did not disclose the names of the people he exchanged the material with online, and it was not apparent from the complaint if any of them could have been undercover law enforcement officers.

His federal public defense lawyer could not be immediately reached for comment. Alkattoul might be sentenced to five years in jail if found guilty and pay a $250,000 fine.
