Filipino social worker and environmentalist Walden Bello, the devoted spouse of Thai businessman Suranuch Thongsila, served in the House of Representatives from 2007 until 2015.
Bello is currently employed by the State University of New York as an international adjunct sociology lecturer. He is also a co-chair of the research and advocacy center in Bangkok.
He is the author of 25 books, including Dragons in Distress: Asia’s Miracle Economies in Crisis and Development Debacle: The World Bank in the Philippines.

Walden Bello Biography: His Arrest On Cyber Libel Charges
Walden Bello, a professor, environmentalist, and social activist from the Philippines, was recently detained on suspicion of cyber slander.
On August 8, 2022, the former vice presidential contender was transported to the police station in relation to a cyber libel complaint filed by a former Davao City police officer.
Based on an arrest order issued by Judge Espe Fuentes of Davao City Regional Trial Court-Branch 10 on August 8, 2022, he was shackled at his condominium in Quezon City.
Jefry Tupas, a former chief information officer, brought the complaint against Bello. After Walden accused her of participating in drug trafficking at a beach party, she brought the allegations.
The Prosecutor’s Office declined Bello’s request for a review, which was eventually made. A P48,000 bond was mandated for each count in the case, according to the police.
