A 59-year-old South Korean soprano named Sumi Jo maintains the identity of her husband and her marital status private from the general public.

Sumi Jo is well known for her rendition of the bel canto repertoire, which brought her a Grammy. Since her debut, she has over 50 recordings and 10 solo albums to her credit.

Jo won the La Siola d’Oro in 1993, making her the first Asian soprano to do it. She won six international competitions and was the first Asian prima donna to perform in opera houses worldwide.

She sang a duet with Sohyang during the 2018 Winter Paralympic Games opening ceremony. In addition, she provided Veda Pierce’s singing voice for the Mildred Pierce HBO miniseries.

“Take 1,” the first Korean musical reality show on Netflix, started on October 14, 2022. Jo is one of the musicians in the show.

Sumi Jo, 59 years old, is the daughter of Jon Eon-ho and Kim Mal-soon.

Jo’s mother was an amateur singer who could not pursue her dreams because of politics in 1950s Korea. However, Sumi’s mother was determined to provide her with opportunities in the music industry.

Mal-soon enrolled her in piano lessons when she was four years old and singing classes when she was six. Jo’s mother severely punished her because she practised music for eight hours straight.

She received a dual piano playing and a singing diploma from Sun Hwa Arts School in 1980. She continued her education in the voice department of Seoul National University from 1981 to 1983.

While still a college student, she gave her first professional performance. She then left Seoul National University and moved to Conservatorio Santa Cecilia in Rome. She graduated with a degree in keyboards and vocals in 1985.
