Shirley entered a not guilty plea during her attempted murder trial in April 1996 due to her insanity. The jury’s 9-3 decision in favor of acquittal, according to the San Francisco Chronicle, resulted in a mistrial.

According to the Press Democrat newspaper in Santa Rosa, she received a 1997 sentence of one year in jail, five years of probation, and 3,000 hours of community service.
