Reason Behind Ben Stokes Retirement From ODI And Tribute To His Career

Ben Stokes was at the centre of one of the greatest thrillers in the game’s history in the 2019 World Cup final.

A Durham man maintained his composure until the final delivery, despite the around 30,000 fans in the Lord’s stadium going crazy. He was forced to confront the nation of his birth, which was ironic.

But he was sufficient. The 31-year-old got his team on the line even if he couldn’t bring his squad across the goal line, stealing the game back from the Kiwis. Many would contend that it wasn’t the most conventional game because there were several debatable choices.

Ben Stokes Retirement From ODI Reason Behind

Some in the cricketing community claim that while many were surprised by Ben Stokes’ retirement, it was long overdue.

Monday, July 18, 2022, would forever change ODI cricket in England. The other captain of the English team quit ODI cricket after Eoin Morgan, their skipper, announced his retirement.

One of the best all-rounders of the modern era, Ben Stokes, concluded that ODI cricket wasn’t for him. Everyone’s first thought, in my opinion, was probably, “Are you kidding?” Because, among other things, I found it hard to believe that I needed to confirm.

Many cricketers debuted at the age of 31, but Stokes chose to end his career. Yet why? Is there something going on in the background?

We know how demanding England’s cricket calendar is, particularly for players who play several formats, like Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler, and Joe Root. However, people don’t believe that his schedule solely caused his retirement.

Let’s start with the obvious: England competed in a three-match ODI series against India. Ben Stokes was out with the first pitch, and the squad was dismissed for just 110. The all-rounder added just 48 runs in the series’ first three games.

Ben Stokes Career Tribute

The English saviour Ben Stokes, who retired from ODI cricket, has got a lot of tributes already, but he will still be a force in T20 and Test cricket.

This demonstrates the superiority of T20 cricket in the present era. The format is more exciting and entertaining for many fans because it is less frantic, quick, and takes less time. The ODI format, however, has long served as the game’s foundation.

Additionally, Ben Stokes has an exceptional track record in Test Cricket. The middle-order batsman has 5280 runs scored in 152 innings while averaging over 36.

But everyone recalls the Ashes in Headingly when discussing Ben Stokes and Test cricket. The all-rounder, who scored 135* in 219 deliveries, single-handedly gave England the victory.

In T20 cricket, Stokes is regarded as one of England’s most explosive batsmen. But most English players adopt a similar style of play.

Ironically, Stokes’ biggest failure to impress occurred in the 2016 T20 World Cup final when he failed to hold on to 19 runs. The game that cost England the world cup was won by Carlos Braithwaite, who struck four sixes off of four balls.

Who Will Replace Ben Stokes?

There isn’t a single player in England who can fully replace Ben Stokes.

Stokes was one of the best all-around players in the game and was never short of runs. He saved his squad from hopeless situations more times than anyone can count.

However, we must take into account the fact that Stokes is no longer available for ODIs. The middle order appears just as erratic now that Morgan is also gone.

There is no lack of openers on the England Cricket squad. Phil Salt, Dawid Malan, Tom Banton, Zack Crawley, Dom Sibley, and others are among them.

However, unlike Stokes and Morgan, the club lacks a complete middle-order batsman who can serve as an inning’s anchor.

Dawid Malan, however, is a player on whom England can rely. The dynamic opener has enough ODI experience to keep the inning moving quickly when necessary.
