The singer has been imprisoned in a Brooklyn jail for more than a year. According to the Chicago Tribune, R Kelly’s attorneys claim that he received a COVID-19 diagnosis while incarcerated at the Sing Sing Correctional Facility in New York.

R Kelly Sexual Allegations & Charges

On February 3, 2002, a tape that purportedly showed Kelly sexually abusing a girl who was believed to be underage started to circulate. The Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office in Illinois accused Kelly of aggravated criminal sexual abuse on ten counts on February 22, 2019.

Kelly was ordered to keep her distance from minors under 18 and the claimed victim while being jailed on a $1 million bail. He claimed all accusations startled him, and his lawyers pledged to establish his innocence. After spending three nights in Cook County Jail—where he had been kept without charge for more than two weeks—he was eventually freed on bond.

His legal team argued that he had never considered suicide or been suicidal; therefore, the safeguards were pointless, harsh, and cruel.

In preparation for a trial in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, Kelly left Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn on July 13, 2022, and traveled to Metropolitan Correctional Center in Chicago.
