AFL legend Paul Dear passes away from cancer on Saturday morning at the age of 55 after a valiant fight.

Legendary Hawthorne author Paul Dear dies suddenly at age 55. The first-place finisher in the 1991 championship game, Norm Smith, had been battling pancreatic cancer for two years. Hawthorn officially confirmed the rumors in a statement over the weekend.

The release reads, “Paul Dear, a premiership player, passed away today. Hawthorn Football Club is extremely devastated.” The club offers its deepest sympathies to Paul’s family and friends.

Paul Dear loved and admired his four children, and he was a fantastic father to them. Paul played 123 tournaments during the course of his nine-year professional career with Hawthorn from 1987 to 1996.
