After graduating from high school, he went to the University of Arkansas to study physical education, where he founded his first band, the Hawks. He went on tour with them through Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Missouri.

Hawkins also owned and ran the Rockwood Club in Fayetteville, where Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison, and Conway Twitty were among the first rock and roll pioneers to perform.
