Doctor Nafis Sadik from Pakistan, who spearheaded the innovative action plan and advocated for women’s health and rights, passed away at 92. Find more about her in this post.

Nafis Sadik’s son Omar Sadik announced his mother’s passing and said she died five days before turning 93.

In 1971, Nafis Sadik started working for the UN Inhabitants Fund. She was promoted to the rank of deputy government director in 1977, and she received the title of government director in 1987.

She was the first woman to participate in an effective United Nations program.

Nafis Sadik Death Cause

On Sunday evening, Nafis Sadik passed away in her New York residence from natural causes. Sadik had been unwell for a while and was not known to the diplomatic community in New York.

Dr. Natalia Kanem, executive director of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), paid a sincere homage to her in a statement and expressed her regret over her departure, describing her as a fierce advocate for women’s health, rights, and empowerment.

Dr. Sadik served as the special adviser to the UN secretary-general after leaving UNFPA in 2000 and joining UNFPA in 1971.

Nafis Sadik was born in the city of Jaunpur, in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. She was Iffat Ara’s and Mohammad Shoaib’s daughter.

Before obtaining her medical doctorate, Nafis studied at the Dow Medical College in Karachi and Loreto College in Kolkata. Then, at City Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, she finished her internship in gynecology and obstetrics.

Before joining the UN, Sadik served as the director-general of the Pakistan Central Family Planning Council. She has obstetrician-gynecology training.

Nafis Sadik Leadership In Family Planning

In 1976, Nafis Sadik became the first female recipient of the Hugh Moore Award. She was given the name of a pioneering American woman credited with raising public awareness of the population problem.

In addition to influencing other women to work in the population sector, Nafis was honored for her leadership in family planning.

The contribution Dr. Sadik made to population planning during her 14 years as UNFPA’s executive director cannot be emphasized enough.

She was the most significant global source of funding for population planning efforts.

For her efforts to improve women’s and children’s health, Nafis was awarded various awards and distinctions from nations worldwide.

She was a Pakistani physician who joined the American Association of Physicians. In addition, she was selected to join the 1988 Fellowship ad eundem of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists in the United Kingdom.

Dr. Sadik held the general secretary position at the International Conference on Population and Development in Cairo in 1994.

Azhar Sadik, Nafis Sadik’s husband, died several years ago, leaving her with five children.
