The Jamaican-British actress was best known for her role as Blossom Jackson on the BBC’s EastEnders. She portrayed Susu in Desmond’s in the early 1990s.

Hammond has had a long and successful theater career. She was well known for her work on British television and for playing Blossom Jackson in the BBC serial opera EastEnders. She was awarded an OBE in the 2005 Queen’s Birthday Honours List for her contributions to the theater.

She also spent two years performing for the Royal National Theatre in The Crucible, Peer Gynt, and Fuente Ovejuna. Before switching to EastEnders, she first contributed to The Sweeney, Juliet Bravo, and Coronation Street.

She has made appearances in episodes like Death in Paradise, Doctor Who, The Bill, and Last of the Mohicans, in addition to Holby City. In Desmond’s cast, she created the role of Susu, which she later played again in the Porkpie spin-off of the show. In addition, the famous late person played Mabel Thompson in BBC’s The Archers, which was shown on television.

On January 1st, 1931, Mavis Chin gave birth to Hammond at Tweeside, Clarendon Parish. Her father was Chinese, while her mother was Jamaican.

She traveled to the UK in 1959 on a Jamaican Scholarship and worked for Norman & Dawbarn Architects. She spent her first two years of evening classes at the City Literary Institute in London before receiving a scholarship to the esteemed Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), where she received her degree in 1964.

Mona was given the name Mavis Chin by her Jamaican and Chinese parents. She was respectfully awarded an OBE in the year 2005 for her contributions to the theater. Additionally, she was honored with the Women of the World Lifetime Achievement Award in 2018 for her efforts to support Black British actresses.

In appreciation of her extensive and accomplished career in theater and her work with Talawa Theatre Company promoting Black British artists, Hammond was given the Women of the World Lifetime Achievement Award in 2018. Talawa Theatre Company was founded in 1985 by Inigo Espejel, Carmen Munroe, Yvonne Brewster, and Hammond. It has since grown to become one of the UK’s most well-known black theater companies.

In the 2005 Queen’s Birthday Honours List, Hammond was named an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for her contributions to the theater in the UK. In addition, Hammond received the Edric Connor Inspiration Award, the highest award bestowed by the Screen Nation Film & Television Awards in the UK, in 2006.
