After meeting Johnny Lewis at the Newtown Police Boys Club in Sydney, he was introduced to boxing. As a young youngster, he had previously engaged in legal disputes and played junior rugby league.

After that, Fenech had a prosperous amateur career that allowed him to represent his country at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, where he was selected to captain the boxing team. However, Yugoslavian Redep Redepovski overcame Fenech in a disputed Olympic quarterfinal match.
