JZ served as vice president from 1999 to 2005, president from 1997 to 2007, and deputy president from 1997 to 2007 in the nation’s dominant party, the African National Congress.

Following the conviction of billionaire Schabir Shaik for fraud and corruption, the former president was ousted in June 2005. On behalf of Zuma, Shaik was accused of bribing a French producer of weapons.

In the hearing, the court claimed that Shaik and Zuma were connected in a customarily corrupt way. In the end, he was charged with two counts of corruption.

Despite the accusations, he was appointed as party president instead of Mbeki.
