Jacob Zuma, a well-known politician from South Africa, received a 15-month prison term. In addition to being the fourth president of South Africa, Zuma also goes by the aliases JZ and Msholozi. He has already been accused of rape and corruption.

As the former president’s medical bail was deemed illegal, news about him circulated online. As a result, the former president of South Africa, Jacob Zuma, was sent back to prison to complete the remainder of his 15-month term for contempt of court.

Jacob Zuma Jail: Is He In Jail?

Jacob Zuma was tried for rape in March 2006 while the corruption allegations were still pending. In May, he was found not responsible. However, because of the state’s insufficient proof, a Durban court rejected the corruption prosecution in September.

In June 2021, Zuma was sentenced to 15 months in prison after the Constitutional Court found him in contempt of court for declining to participate in the disciplinary procedures.

JZ began serving his term in July, but he was hospitalized for surgery in August due to an inexplicable medical condition. The following month, he received a medical release and was allowed to serve the rest of his sentence at home.

On April 12, 1942, Jacob was born in Nkandla. He served as a politician and president of South Africa from 2009 until he was forced to step down in 2018. JZ served as vice president from 1999 to 2005, president from 1997 to 2007, and deputy president from 1997 to 2007 in the nation’s dominant party, the African National Congress.

Following the conviction of billionaire Schabir Shaik for fraud and corruption, the former president was ousted in June 2005. On behalf of Zuma, Shaik was accused of bribing a French producer of weapons.

In the hearing, the court claimed that Shaik and Zuma were connected in a customarily corrupt way. In the end, he was charged with two counts of corruption.

Despite the accusations, he was appointed as party president instead of Mbeki. Later that month, in addition to the initial allegations of corruption and fraud, Zuma was also charged with additional counts of money laundering, racketeering, and tax evasion. These charges were subsequently withdrawn in September 2008 due to a legal technicality.

Where Is Jacob Zuma Now?

The 79-year-old politician is completing the remaining 15 months of his 15-month sentence at his house in Nklandla after being granted medical parole.

A South African prison ordered the former president to report back to custody because his release was illegal and illegitimate. The court further ruled that the 15-month sentence would not include his time outside captivity.

After Zuma’s supporters protested against the court hearing, there was a nationwide riot. But, even though many protesters sacrificed their lives, the court’s decision stood.

Jacob’s illness was kept a secret. However, following his incarceration, he needed surgery. “At the time that confinement had an exponential impact in terms of degrading his condition,” one of his representatives claimed.

According to the BBC, the Democratic Alliance leader declared that “this is a significant triumph for the rule of law and the idea of equality before the law.”
