Is There Really A Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd?

Yes, an abandoned tunnel is under East Ocean Boulevard in Los Angeles. The Jergins Subway is also known as the Long Beach Jergins Tunnel.

The iconic Jergins Trust building was constructed in 1919 at a period of significant growth for Long Beach. It was built for Fred Markwell by architect Harvey Lochridge five years prior.

The Jergins Tunnel, a subway for pedestrians, was built in 1927. A survey found that over 2,000 people cross Ocean Boulevard near Pine Avenue every hour. This figure increased to 4,000 on the weekends as more people used Ocean Blvd. to access the beach.

The Jergins Trust building had control over one of the underground entrances. According to reports, the Jergins Trust Company paid $20,000 to the tunnel’s building, including a skylight and beautiful tile.

Jergins Tunnel was built at a low cost of $100,000 when Ocean Blvd. was already excavated to realign the Pacific Electric trains. (The Red Vehicles)

The Newest Song By Lana Del Rey

Did you realize that a tunnel actually undercuts Ocean Boulevard? asks the first line of a song by Lana Del Rey.

In the song’s opening line, Lana sings, “Mosaic ceilings, painted tiles on the wall / I can’t help but feel somewhat like my body scarred my soul / Handmade beauty walled up by two man-made walls.”

The Born To Die vocalist incorporates a Harry Nilsson song called Don’t Forget Me as a sample in one of her most recent songs.

She also pays tribute to Nilsson throughout the song, quoting the line, “His voice breaks at 2:05” from the song Don’t Forget Me from his 1974 album Pussy Cats.

The tunnel was shut down in 1967 by the Jergins Trust and the Long Beach City Council, allegedly for safety reasons.

As the Renaissance Hotel’s development began in the 1980s, one of the entrances was sealed off. The other was destroyed in 1988 when the Jergins Trust building was demolished.

However, there have been efforts to make the tunnel usable again. In 2002, the Long Beach City Council asked for a study to see if the Jergins Tunnel could be opened again.

As part of a cultural event on October 28, 2007, the Jergins Tunnel was opened for a short time. An impromptu movie theater playing early 20th-century films about Long Beach was set up in the pedestrian subway as part of the University by the Sea festival.
