American singer-songwriter-actor Harry Belafonte is also a campaigner. He helped popularize Trinidadian Caribbean music worldwide and was possibly the most successful Jamaican-American pop musician of the 1950s.
His landmark record Calypso (1956), which sold one million copies, became the first L.P. by a single artist to achieve platinum status. His most well-known songs include “Jamaica Farewell” and “The Banana Boat Song,” both of which feature the famous “Day-O” idiom.
Throughout the 1950s and 1960s Civil Rights Movement, Belafonte was Martin Luther King Jr.’s close friend and confidante. Paul Robeson, an actor, musician, and activist, was another role model for him.

After some people produced obituary articles on Harry Belafonte, fans were curious to discover what caused his passing.
As usual, the death hoax caused a Twitter frenzy. However, on Wednesday, representatives for Harry Belafonte formally confirmed his survival (July 06).
While some followers were credulous and fooled into the claim, others quickly questioned the truth, possibly having learned their lesson from the countless erroneous stories of celebrity deaths that have arisen in recent months.
Others claimed the tale was a hoax because no significant American network had reported it, even though the passing of a well-known musician like Harry Belafonte would have made news on all networks.
A large majority of respondents (88 percent) to recent research done for the Celebrity Post claimed they no longer find the Harry Belafonte death rumors amusing.
