David Trimble began teaching law at The Queen’s University of Belfast in the 1970s, the same decade in which he also started to develop ties to the paramilitary-affiliated Vanguard Progressive Unionist Party.

Having been selected to serve in the Northern Ireland Constitutional Convention in 1975, he joined the UUP in 1978 after the VPUP was disbanded.

In 1995, he unexpectedly prevailed in the race for UUP leadership. In addition, his and John Hume’s efforts in the debates that led to the Good Friday Agreement earned them a share of the 1998 Nobel Peace Prize.

Later, he was selected to serve as Northern Ireland’s first First Minister. However, his tenure was challenging and frequently hampered by disagreements about the timeline for the disarmament of the Provisional Irish Republican Army.

Trimble stepped down as the UUP’s leader shortly after the party’s general election defeat in 2005. In June 2006, he accepted a life peerage in the House of Lords under Baron Trimble of Lisnagarvey in the County of Antrim.
