At the age of 80, Canadian lawyer and activist Clayton Ruby passed away. He was an expert in civil rights, criminal justice, and constitutional law.
He and Marlys Edwardh were partners at the legal practice Ruby & Edwardh from 1976 to 2008. He has been a partner in Toronto, Ontario, attorney Ruby Shiller Chan Hasan’s office since 2007.
Ruby was a member of the Church of Scientology’s legal team employed to defend itself and the nine members.

He served as Donald Marshall Junior’s attorney during the Royal Commission. Ruby, a Toronto, Ontario native, graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from York University in 1963.
In 1969, he graduated from the University of Toronto with a Bachelor of Laws; the following year, he was admitted to the bar. Finally, in 1973, he graduated with a law master’s degree from the University of California, Berkeley.

In 2012, Ruby represented a plaintiff in a well-known conflict of interest action which sought Rob Ford’s resignation as mayor of Toronto. The plaintiff and Ruby were successful. The mayor then issued a request. However, Ford maintained her position once the appeal was successful on January 25, 2012.

Clayton Ruby is married to Harriet Sachs, an Ontario Superior Court of Justice judge. We were shocked to read of the passing of Clayton Ruby’s father, Louis Ruby, who from the late 1930s through the 1970s published the controversial Toronto tabloid and gossip magazine Flash Weekly.
Harriet Sachs, a Superior Court of Ontario judge, and their two daughters, Emma and Kate, are Ruby’s survivors.
He wrote several legal textbooks and was an expert in criminal, constitutional, administrative, and civil rights law. Ruby played a significant role in Canada’s fight for LGBTQ rights when he defended Michelle Douglas, an ex-member of the Canadian Forces, in 1989.
