He served as Donald Marshall Junior’s attorney during the Royal Commission. Ruby, a Toronto, Ontario native, graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from York University in 1963.

In 1969, he graduated from the University of Toronto with a Bachelor of Laws; the following year, he was admitted to the bar. Finally, in 1973, he graduated with a law master’s degree from the University of California, Berkeley.

Clayton Ruby is married to Harriet Sachs, an Ontario Superior Court of Justice judge. We were shocked to read of the passing of Clayton Ruby’s father, Louis Ruby, who from the late 1930s through the 1970s published the controversial Toronto tabloid and gossip magazine Flash Weekly.

Harriet Sachs, a Superior Court of Ontario judge, and their two daughters, Emma and Kate, are Ruby’s survivors.

He wrote several legal textbooks and was an expert in criminal, constitutional, administrative, and civil rights law. Ruby played a significant role in Canada’s fight for LGBTQ rights when he defended Michelle Douglas, an ex-member of the Canadian Forces, in 1989.
